The Science of the Blue

A brilliant, almost neon blue river slicing through dense tropical rainforest. You blink, assuming your eyes deceive you. They do not. Hidden within the lush borders of the Tenorio Volcano National Park lies one of Central America’s most enigmatic natural phenomena.

For decades, local legends claimed the gods washed their paintbrushes in these waters after painting the sky. The reality is equally fascinating. At a specific point called the Teñideros, the Quebrada Agria and the Rio Buena Vista converge. The mixture of these two distinct rivers create a visual shock. Volcanic minerals, specifically aluminosilicates, coat the riverbed. These suspended particles reflect sunlight in the blue spectrum—a chemical reaction known to physicists as Mie scattering.

The hike to the waterfall is spectacualr but demanding. Normally, you would descend approximately 250 steep steps to reach the base of the roaring cascade, but due to recent storm damage, the lower portion of the stairs is closed and you can only go partway down. Beyond the falls, the trail continues past the Borbollones, where escaping volcanic gases cause the river to bubble like a cauldron. The entire system is shaped by the geothermal activity of the Tenorio Volcano, acting as a constant reminder that the earth here is very much alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the water be blue if it rains?

Heavy, prolonged rainfall can wash sediment into the river, temporarily turning it muddy or brown. If you are visiting during the green season, aim for early morning hikes before afternoon showers disrupt the water’s clarity.

How difficult is the hike?

The trail is rated as moderate. The primary path is relatively flat but notoriously muddy. The true challenge is the steep staircase descending to the waterfall—normally approximately 250 steps down, and 250 steps back up (though the lower section is currently closed). Waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended.

Where should I stay?

We strongly suggest booking accommodations in Bijagua. It places you mere minutes from the park entrance. Browse our Lodging & Accommodations guide for options ranging from rustic eco-lodges to boutique retreats.
